Presidential hopefuls preying on anti-Iraq voters

Hagel: Iraq Destabilizing Mideast
Fox News

Chuck Hagel (R-Neb) has somewhat joined Feingold as a presidential hopeful making noises about withdrawal of US troops in Iraq.

"We should start figuring out how we get out of there," Hagel said on "This Week" on ABC. "But with this understanding, we cannot leave a vacuum that further destabilizes the Middle East. I think our involvement there has destabilized the Middle East. And the longer we stay there, I think the further destabilization will occur."

Hagel said "stay the course" is not a policy. "By any standard, when you analyze 2 1/2 years in Iraq ... we're not winning," he said.

Amazing that Congressional members can't seem to grasp there is a strategy. It's only been laid out for us umpteen millions of times. Train enough Iraqis to defend themselves and we're gone. That's the strategy. If the Prez wants to call it "stay the course" in verbal shorthand, so be it.

As far as destabilization, nothing could be further from the truth. Witness Libya's backing away from their WMD program. Further developments there include plans to open an American Embassay in Tripoli, plus the aim of removing Libya from the US list of countries that support terrorists.

"... destabilizing the Middle East"??? For whom? The terrorists, of course. And isn't that the goal?

What of the events between Lebanon and Syria?

Iraq is on it's way to finalizing a constitution. The Iraqi's have come to agreement on one of the two major sticking points on the Constitution - the role of Islam in goverment. Definite progress for a fledging country determined to succeed. Add to that, elected women representatives, more free press, even town hall meetings. What a change a few years has wrought.

Again, I repeat. "... destabilizing the Middle East"??? I can only shake my head. What the heck are these bozos talking about?

The only "destabilization" is an increased terrorist activity there because they, unlike the American Congress, know what's at stake when an oil and water rich, democractic Iraq joins the world in trade, economic growth, religious tolerance and personal freedoms. Only the most naive would expect them to sit back without a fight.

Instead, I fully expect the terrorists to "stay the course" themselves. And as long as the Cowboy Prez holds office, they will lose.

It's going to be fun watching these guys trip over the foot they just took out of their mouths in order to insert the other during this long campaign period. One must question the wisdom of his advisor advocating jumping on a moving bandwagon.

In light of this country still being more determined finish the job in Iraq, and our blunt refusal to hand the reins to terrorists by our premature exit, Hagel will have a chance in hell of obtaining the nomination for the RNC. And that suits me just fine.
