Abbas vs militants...the saga continues

Abbas Fires Security Chiefs for Not Stopping Chaos
By Mohammed Assadi, Ramallah, West Bank (Reuters)

There is no question that Abbas, despite his own checkered past, was the best choice for Arafat's replacement. However I have always doubted whether Abbas would be able to control his own militants, despite his wishes for peace between Israel and Palestine.

I will have to give him a B minus for efforts. Indeed, he appears to be unwavering in his convictions to aim for peace between the nations.

Yet his methods of "control" of his own Palestinian terrorists still resemble more a parent cajoling a child into good behavior, and less a strong, determined leader who refuses to accept chaos as an option.

It comes as no surprise that, as the security chiefs urged the terrorists to set their weapons aside, the Palestinian terrorists,
Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade turned on their own elected leader, firing at his compound Wednesday.

Not overly thrilled at the "lawlessness", Abbas' then fired a bank of security chiefs.

"(Abbas) was not happy with the performance of some of the heads of security forces," a Palestinian official said. "He was very upset about what happened in Ramallah and he will take other crucial measures in the near future."

Upset as Abbas may be, his attempts to rein in his own terrorists still rely on negotiations. For these agreements to be a success, of course, the terrorist organizations are required to demonstrate honor and remain true to their agreed truce.

But, true to MSM reporting style, the most interesting tidbit in the entire report liesin the last sentence. Apparently, prior to Abbas' dismissal orders, the head of the Palestinian Intelligence decided to tender his own resignation, citing complaining too little was being done to halt the chaos.

That, I wager is a great loss to Abbas. It's a rare Palestinian that recognizes "talking the talk" is a moot point when dealing with militants who possess not one whit of honor in their souls.

Abbas is slowly climbing the hill to peace. If his intents remain steadfast, then all that remains is his realization that "talking" just ain't gonna cut it angry, cowardly and anti-Israel terrorists.
