Why we fought
By Clifford D. May, Townhall columnist
It's hard to believe that with all that's happened in Iraq and Middle East, there are those still screaming "Bush lied".
For those short of memory, yet determined to deride the Iraqi liberation as based on the "lie" of WMDs, Mr. May conveniently pulls out quotable quotes from the archives...
Two years ago this week, the American invasion of Iraq was underway. Why had we gone to war? In the months leading up to Operation Iraqi Freedom, President Bush repeatedly gave his reasons.
Saddam Hussein, he said on Oct. 7, 2002, “has tried to dominate the Middle East, has invaded and brutally occupied a small neighbor, has struck other nations without warning, and holds an unrelenting hostility toward the United States.”
The President added: “Some al-Qaeda leaders who fled Afghanistan went to Iraq. These include one very senior al-Qaeda leader who received medical treatment in Baghdad this year…” He was talking about the now infamous Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who to this day commands suicide bombers and cuts throats for video releases
Next time someone does the "but there were no WMD's" dance for you, you may want to remember these dates. WMDs was the common reason used to address the UN Security Council. It was the most logical argument since there were 17 prior resolutions on the same infractions.
However WMDs was by no means the *only* reason to unseat Saddam. And one important factor comes back to the same reason we unseated the Taliban... because they were harboring, aiding and abetting AQ. That we knew Saddam was hosting the recouperation of Zarqawi... now infamously known to us all as the beheader... reveals that deposing Saddam was little different than deposing the Taliban for the same reasons.
