Toby Harnden in Fallujah observes American soldiers of the 1st Infantry Division taskforce avenging their fallen comrades as battle begins
"Given the choice, I would never have wanted to fire a gun," said Cpl Chris
Merrell, 21, manning a machinegun mounted on a Humvee. "But it didn't work out that way. I'd like a thousand boring missions rather than one interesting
one."
On his wrist was a black bracelet bearing the name of a sergeant from
Phantom Troop. "This is a buddy of mine that died," he said. "Pretty much
everyone in the unit has one."
I wear a black bracelet too, bearing the name of a Marine Corporal. One never removes these bracelets. One never forgets.
Long ago, during the Vietnam war, I was in Junior Highschool wearing an MIA bracelet. My guy DID eventually return home, alive, in my highschool years. I celebrated in letters with his family. Back then, I was in Marin County, CA. And wearing this MIA bracelet allowed me to see the so-called "Two Americas" (as coined by John Edwards) close up.
Some, seeing my MIA bracelet, said they too would pray for my guy. Or they lightly touched my shoulder and gave me respect. Others, however, sneered and jeered at me, telling me what an idiot I was. Taking aside, for the moment, anyone's opinion on my MIA bracelet -- ask yourself: Would you decide to succumb/appease to those who called you an idiot?
In a nutshell, that's what happened in this Presidential Election 2004. Dems are spinning madly for the right "spell and incantation" to re-invent themselves as a party.
For those, reading here, some very young -- you may not at all understand or be aware -- that for over 30 years, Democrats have been emotionally and verbally abusing anyone who has a diverse opinion from the Democrat Party agenda and talking points. It didn't used to be this way; Dems and Republicans had different ways of solving problems and promoting American interests. There, as a girl, in Marin County, I witnessed the change in the Democratic Party. It continued on its "agenda" of solving problems; but it stopped promoting American interests. It became anti-constitutional, anti-American.. I saw the early beginnings of the hijacking of the Democratic party.
Back to now.
Sure, sure... this can all be spun (by Dems) as a vote for President Bush as being a jihad by hatefilled Americans. And this is what they are trying to do and say.
In my own eyes, its no different that the serial female batterer who is finally caught and attempts to malign those he has abused by saying "it was consensual" or "she hit me first".
I was there. I lived it. I do not forget.
And Nor do I forget our troops. My steadfast prayers for each and all our American troops, Iraqi troops, and Multi-National troops.
Win! Accomplish the Mission; come home soon -- we miss you. And we never forget.
