Iraq presidency a picture of diversity

Even the most liberal of America's left can't complain about the Iraqi choice of presidental powers in the fledgling democracy.

A Kurd for President, one Sunni VP, and one Shiite VP.

And unlike the constantly battling US Congress, the Iraqi Assembly had little doubts about their choices, with 227 votes for the three candidates, and only 30 blank votes.

"This is the new Iraq, where no sect or minority controls the whole country," parliament speaker Hajim al-Hassani said. "It is an Iraq where all the people are unified."

What I particularly liked was the Assembly's request that the entire process be televised to Saddam and compadres in jail.

"This is a very important session because this is the first time in Iraq's history that the president and his deputies are elected in a legitimate and democratic way by the Iraqi people," interim Vice President Rowsch Nouri Shaways said. "That's why the Iraqi government thought it would be beneficial that the former dictator see this unique process."

Personally I think that's a kinder slap to the face than the former dictator deserves. But I have to applaud their civilized determination to "rub it in", as it were. LOL

Fascinating, watching a nation develop before our very eyes. Frankly, I don't understand how an American public can find such idiocy as "Fear Factor" mesmerizing, and events such as this just headline fodder. Our freedoms have made us complacent and soft, and our natural curiousities muted and ill-placed. We have much to learn from the Iraqis and their dedication to the formation of a new nation, dedicated to freedom... even if it is Iraqi style.
