Author Says U.S. Blocking U.N. Arab Report
Associated Press
Oh my... there's so much in this article that's just downright laughable that I hardly know where to start. Let's see if I can simplify this.
Since 2002, there has been a UN sponsored report on development and growth in Arab states. Said report is done by an "independent" team of Arab policy makers and "experts". Previous reports by this bunch have ticked off the Arab leaders since they highlighted deplorable progress for freedom, education and women's rights.
The authors chosen to compose these reports have remained, for the most part, status quo. Indeed, Bush and the US welcomed the previous reports.
Now, because the latest report has strong criticism for the US coalition's action in Iraq, AND because the UN has appears to be hedging the release date, tumbling from the lips of every eager, anti-US MSM journalist is the accusation that the US forcing the UN to keep the report under wraps.
LOL! Get real! Since when has the UN gone out of it's way to "protect" America? Au contraire. If it is negative US, it will not only get released, but it will be leaked *early*!. Where has this guy been?
The UN, of course, has it's own story... equally laughable.
The U.N. organization has denied that any government tried to suppress the 2004 report, which like its predecessors was prepared by an independent team of Arab experts and policy makers. But UNDP hinted at problems in a statement responding to questions about when the report would appear, saying any document coming out under the UNDP's name "must meet the high standards of impartiality expected of a U.N. agency."
Oh mercy... Forgive me, but that "high standards of impartiality" bit really has me going! This is better than the Sunday comics! But wait. I'm not done yet...
The report features all the usual anti-American talking point charges. The US "occupies" Iraq like Israel does the Palestinian territories. For, as we know, nothing can ever be done by Arabs without including the obligatory "bash Israel" statement. And of course, we have committed "savage strikes" and "collective punishment against Iraqis". Last but not least, that we are not serious about calling for more democracy and freedom of speech in Arab countries.
Yada yada yada.... yawn. Nothing we haven't heard yet, so just how upset could we be? Hang... we read all this crap daily in the MSM worldwide! The US denies all this nonsense... like anyone really listens anyway.
But this gets better. The Egyptian government is also highly critical of the report. And in this lies the possible reason for the UN's voluntary delay, saying:
In a letter published in the pan-Arab daily Al Hayat last month, Egyptian Foreign Ministry official Dawlat Hassan said the report's authors had failed to take Egyptian government views into account.
She said U.N. reports should be written in consultation with member governments, and failure to do so is "unacceptable belittling of these states and it does not express a real readiness for cooperation to create a partnership for the development of this area." Hassan did not return repeated phone calls from the AP.
oh KAY! Now we're getting somewhere. The UN doesn't give one whit that the report criticizes America. It's Egypt's feelings with which they concern themselves.
Authors accuse Egypt of not giving enough "say" to the Coptic Christian minority, and the banned Muslim Brotherhood. Egypt, naturally denies both. They say there is no discrimination against the Christians, and that the Muslim Brotherhood is a "violent fundamentalist group".
I'm not familiar enough with Egypts' goin's on to comment on the truth or half-truths of the accusations. But I can say this... if the Muslim brotherhood is a radical element, kudos to Egypt for keeping them in line.
But what is, once again, the height of irony is that the US becomes the scapegoat for all this bru-ha-ha in the headlines. They do so love to hate us. Makes you wonder, how would they possibly survive without the US to blame for everything that happens?
