I was a girl living in another country in the early 60s. From there, I followed Martin Luther King Jr's mission. Who could not be moved by his "I have a Dream" speech delivered in Washington, DC on August 28, 1963.
So much has changed. I think Mrs. King is quite mistaken in embracing the gay rights issue as part and parcel and in "like" with the black rights struggle. Were blacks pre-1960s engaging in activities that were perverse and/or non-organically "natural"? No. In so making such endorsements, she errs, IMHO. What would be more fitting is for her to embrace such issues as discrimination against Christians, discrimination against Republicans. But that won't happen.
On the left coast? Discrimination against Christians and Republicans is rampant. And hidious. Here in the South? That doesn't happen. But conversely, nor do I see discrimination against gays or Democrats here in the South.
I read in my local paper yesterday, that Coretta King's home in Georgia had been burglarized over an 8-year period. Her family was concerned and was looking for a safer place for their mother, throughout this 8-year space of time. It finally arrived, recently, in the form of a gift from Oprah who bought a deluxe, luxurious living pad in the same building as celebrities, replete with security, in Atlanta, for Mrs. King. I'm glad she feels safer. But why did it take her family 8 years to get their mother moved to a safer place? And who, exactly, was committing these burglaries?
I have a dream. And I'm living it. Finally. I'm living now in a place where I'm not continually put down, bashed, thrashed and put away and because of the color of my skin, my "sex" preferences, my religious beliefs, and my political beliefs.
