Meehan: Here's the exit:
Rep returns from Iraq with plan
By Jules Crittenden, The Boston Herald
What is it with these Massachusettes boys? Is there something in the water there that makes the "I've got a plan" phrase dribble from their lips at the mere sight of the media?
And what is his big exit plan? Meehan thinks that Bush and Allawi need to announce a "timetable" for an "exit strategy". Nothing like broadcasting your actions to the enemy well in advance, yes?
Not only is this notion not a novelty, but the inability of so many Congressmen, and media, to comprehend war strategy just boggles the mind.
To win the confidence of the Iraqi people, Meehan said President Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi need to announce a timetable of 12 to 18 months to draw down U.S. troops while building up Iraq.
``We need to change the dynamics so the U.S. is not viewed as the occupier . . . We need to let the Iraqi people and the world know we are not going to be an occupying power forever,'' Meehan said.
Of the 150,000 U.S. troops in Iraq, he said, the growing consensus in Washington and Iraq is ``their very presence is undermining our efforts to defeat the insurgency.''
While his liberal compadres are insisting that more troops are needed, Meehan's saying our troops' presence is undermining our efforts. On one point, I agree with him.
We need more Iraqi troops and less coalition troops in Iraq. And I have no doubt that more Iraqis vs US coalition military power in the state will make Mr. Meehan and the world community feel better - not that I give a whit how they feel.
However training of Iraqi troops takes time... time that can't be predicted just because Mr. Meehan wants to carefully construct a business plan for troops withdrawal, and boldly announce it to the enemy along with the rest of the world.
Mr. Meehan has also prounouced the situation "worse" than it was back in Aug 2003. And what is the basis for his consensus?
Meehan described an Iraq drastically changed for the worse since his last visit in August of 2003. This time, the congressional delegation rode helicopters or armored vehicles between fortified camps.
``It's a contrast from the last time I was there, when we'd drive down the streets and Iraqi people would give us the thumbs up. I didn't see any of that this time,'' Meehan said.
LOL... let's see. No more "thumbs up" for the American Congressman. Ya know, Martin, while you've been fat catting your way around the District, more than a year and a half have gone by in Iraq. The citizens and coalition alike are daily doing battle with scumbags - the excitement of liberation has morphed into reality - freedom has a price. Perhaps they didn't know you needed a "thumbs up" expression of gratitude, like in the early days, to put your soul at ease.
Here's another heads up, Marty. You're in an armored vehicle or being flown around because it would be bad juju to have an American Congressman killed by a roadside bomb. And oh, by the way, why do you and your buds persist in going there and making military personnel waste valuable time, squiring you around for an Iraqi sightseeing tour just so you can come home and wring your hands in dispair?
The stupidity and pious attitudes of Congress never cease to rile me to no end. Frankly I think they should have driven the dolt around in a convertible.
