CA lawmakers try again

KCRA, Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- There's a renewed push to get the Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to pass legislation allowing undocumented immigrants to receive driver's licenses.

Lawmakers have put a new bill on the table, which is identical to the one that has already been vetoed by Schwarzenegger.

Los Angeles Sen. Gil Cedillo and other Latino lawmakers say they want Schwarzenegger to sign the new bill.

(snip)

"We believe the political winds have changed in our favor and people have a clearer understanding of the issue," Cedillo said.

The governor wants immigrant licenses to have a "distinguishing mark" that shows they may not be reliable identification documents. Critics call that discrimination.

Mata Musing

Sometimes those wacky, left CA legislators just don't know when to quit. Let's see... first Gray Davis vetos a similar bill back in Oct 2002. Then he signs it into law, and in short order, is ousted by recall and the Guvenator is installed in his stead.

And Cedillo thinks "the political winds have changed in our favor"??? On what planet has be been residing for the past year or so?
