The area of Cannon Beach, Oregon has a tsunami alert system in place.:
--snip
"Evacuation routes have been established. Residents have signed up to call each other in emergencies. Loudspeakers have been put up around town — and are tested, twice a month, with a recording of a cow's mooing. A siren sound would send people running.
---end snip
This is good. Veddy good.

Yup... I've seen the signs all over out there when I go to the coast, Alia. Perhaps that's why I was so stunned to find out so many did not have a simple alert system. It's not like we don't know the Pacific Rim is one active plate!
The countries talked about the high expense, when queried as to why no system existed. Let's see now... could it not be as simple as an e-mail alert from seismologists and a horn? Not too too outrageous, and certainly effective.
I would guess the most work is in laying out the evacuation routes for the amount of anticipated population at any given time.
Sad to think that most of the 11 countries will implement this... too late. I heard that Australia is planning on taking the lead since they already have a system that records earthquake activity. As they said, it will just take a simple expansion to include passing on the information to the Indian Ocean countries.
Australia is proving itself to be a country of high value - as a concerned neighbor, and an ally of the US in the WOT. Remind me to make that the destination of any overseas travel.... :0) G'day!
Australia. I had my doubts there about Oz during the 80s. But now? I wanna go too, Mata! :) :>
